SKY SOLDIERS DESCEND ON CHARLESTON, SC
5-9 JUNE 2019

ABOUT THE EVENT

South Carolina Chapter 30 is honored to have been selected to host the 2019 reunion, June 5 through June 9. We accept the challenge and pledge that we will do our utmost to conduct a reunion you will be pleased to attend.

Charleston, SC is the site we have chosen. Charleston has been named the best city in the world to vacation in by Travel & Leisure. From the history and architecture of the downtown area, to the world renowned cuisine and nearby beaches, we think you’ll agree that Charleston is a great place to visit.

This year’s registration fee is $173 and includes full access to the hospitality room, complimentary drink tickets for the week, a welcome meal on Wednesday evening, banquet on Saturday night, and registration gifts. Gold Star families will be able to attend a free lunch, and the ladies can also enjoy a free event.

Our hotel will be the Embassy Suites by Hilton in North Charleston. This is an all-suite hotel featuring two-room guest suites with a small kitchen area. Nightly rates are $139. Complimentary breakfast, as well as an evening cocktail reception, will be provided daily. Reunion sign-in will be on the first floor of the Embassy Suites. The hospitality room, meeting rooms, and banquet will be in the adjacent convention center, connected to the hotel by a skywalk. Overflow hotels are located next door to the convention center so that only a short walk will be needed. For those who have sworn off walking, three 15 passenger shuttles will be provided by the hotels. Across the street from the hotel and convention center is Tanger Outlets, featuring brand named shopping at a discount. The surrounding area offers restaurants to suit every taste and budget.

We will offer two day trips during the reunion. The first will be on Thursday, June 6 to Patriots Point, home of the USS Yorktown, a WWII aircraft carrier, and other WWII ships and aircraft. Patriots Point also boasts the Medal of Honor Museum, and the Vietnam Experience, a 2.5 acre replica “Brown Water Navy” support base and a U.S. Marine Corps artillery fire base set during the Tet Offensive and the Battle of Khe Sanh in 1968. Three options are available on the grounds for lunch. Additionally, those choosing to go on the Patriots Point tour may opt to explore Charleston’s harbor by boat for a small additional fee.

On Friday, June 7, we will offer a trip to the historic Charleston City Market area, a four block market over 200 years old that is perhaps the most visited shopping destination in all of downtown Charleston. Originally used as a meat, vegetable, and seafood market, it now showcases local vendors and their unique wares, including the famous Charleston sweetgrass basket weavers. Numerous restaurants can also be found on the surrounding streets. For those wishing to see even more of the historic downtown area, we recommend a one-hour, narrated tour by horse-drawn carriage. Palmetto Carriage Works, the oldest carriage company in town, will offer rides at a discount to anyone who shows their 2019 reunion name tag.

Also on Friday, the golfers among us will be able to enjoy an outing at Summerville Country Club. South Carolina’s premier golf course, Summerville CC was founded in 1925 and designed by “Chick” Miler and Eddie Ricobonni. Formally the Pinehusrt Tea Plantation, the course weaves its way through hundreds of mature pine trees that line the fairways. The design and length of the course allow players of all skill levels to enjoy their game. One-hundred dollars will be won by the golfer who hits it closest to the pin on a selected par three hole.

We hope you are as excited about these plans as we are, and we look forward to seeing you in Charleston!
